Lionel Lamy's Pseudoarchaeology

Even without the show's title, the viewer knows immediatelyupon entering the gallery that there is something both archaeological andpseudo about what they are seeing.

There are portraits of great men we should know. At least wethink that are great and think that we should know them. The truth is they areportraits of the idea of being wise, of being learned, of being important. Butthey are not of anyone in particular who possesses those traits.

The portraits bear x's on their faces or around them. Theyare black and white and the x's or other strokes or designs or scrawling linesaround them are in color.

Some of the faces are more distinct than others, which areblurred or have lines painted on them as if the skull is showing through.

The men are serious and poised and posed. They look likescholars and philosophers, and theirfaces bear expressions of anger or disappointment or, on some, simplystillness. Strangely, they seem angry at or disappointed in the viewer. Or theyseem blank, looking beyond or through the viewer.

They are the faces of no man and of every man. They remindus that there were great men and we don't always remember them. But we should.They are not fodder for archeology. Except that they are. Not because they aretellers of fact. But instead because they are tellers of our stories, as art sooften is.

Other pieces in the show are darker and more tribal, witheyes staring out from canvases painted in designs in blues and reds, orangesand yellows. They both frighten and invite. They seem not to be our ownarchaeology, but instead that of another culture, perhaps one less"civilized."

But in this show, the viewer cannot help but connect them tothe works that surround them. These pieces may not represent the history wewant to tell. But it is history that we must own. We have our own tribes anddarkness among us. Our history is not all made of noble men.

A few pieces in the show look like maps, including"street fewer" with glowing silver streaks and curves and lines andshapes in blue and red and white and black. The work seems to imply that it cantell you where you need to go, but what it reveals is nothing but confusion.

The same can be said for the for the figure in the oldestpiece in the show titled simply, "the business man." Strokes of blackemanate from the man's head as if he's going in too many directions. Thebackground is graffiti and, at first glance, the suit jacket he wears looksmore like a doctor's coat. He's any man in any business on any day. His imagecannot tell us where he is going or where it has been. It, like the"maps," portrays nothing but confusion.

All of the fauxarchaeology in the show feigns to give us information about a culture longgone. But they are not artifacts. They are an artist's musing of what ourartifacts might be. And that is what is so clever about this show. It meansnothing, as the history is "faked." But it means everything, becausewhat is being faked is too close to our own history to not reveal at least sometruth.

Some say it is our histories that tell our stories. Butoften it is our art that is far better at that task.

The Liberator Zeppelin: I LOVE this crazy thing!!

I had no idea what I was getting into when I ordered the Liberator Zeppelin. All I knew was that it looked like fun to me. That, I was right about.

We put it in our living room and it has become everyone’s favorite place to be - to do homework, to read, to nap, for movie night, and, of course, for fooling around. It’s like a massive waterbed with none of the nausea. It moves with you and around you and feels just heavenly. And I love the pebbley texture of the one I picked out. It is so soft. The hard part is convincing any one of us to get off of it. It’s comfy enough to make you late for dinner!

What came as a surprise was how many boxes it came in, what a werid experience it would be to put together, and how enormous it would be. Although not one of those are complaints.

My advice? Be prepared.

The whole deal came in eight boxes total and they are heavy. Six of them contain the insides for the thing, and since they’re compressed, they were much heavier than they looked. So, bring a friend along for this little adventure.

Putting it together was a hoot. It’s a timing thing really. You have to undo all of the masses of tape holding the stuffing together and be sure it’s inside the inner cover before you unleash it. Because once you set it free from its plastic encasement, it starts growing. A lot. And you do not want that stuff all over the place.

And, word to the wise, set the Zeppelin up wherever you intend it to stay. Once it's assembled, it is heavy. H-E-A-V-Y. Heavy. That is what makes it so squishy and comfy and wonderful. But forewarned is forearmed.

I knew it was eight feet by three feet when I ordered it. What I didn’t realize was that when it gets squashed down or over, it seems even bigger since it gets shorter in height and wider in diameter. It looks like the luxury beanbag that ate Manhattan after we play on it and before we fluff it back up! But it's a small price to pay for perhaps the best make-out spot ever!

Still, whatever temporary surprise or madness it caused, it was more than worth it. You could use this thing as a bed or a couch in a bedroom or family room or play room (interpret that however you like…) And Liberator makes a ton of different styles and sizes. So if the Zeppelin doesn’t suit, they probably have one that does.

They also have different shapes of very firm pillows to use in the bedroom to make various positions easier. And those you can hide away in the closet when not in use!

And now, I gotta go, my Zeppelin is calling…

The Heart Attack Grill: Killing customers and laughing all the way to the bank

The food is free if you're over 350 pounds. The burgers are named the single, double, triple, and quadruple bypass. The shakes are made of butterfat. If you think it sounds like some Hollywood conceived nightmare, think again. It's the real thing. It's the Heart Attack Grill.

First opened in Arizona in 2005, it opened Friday, May 13 (how apropos) in Dallas, TX. Some call it a gimmick. But it's more than that. It's a scary invitation to eat yourself to the grave and people are signing up for the ride.

The "brains" behind this operation is Jon Bosso, who calls himself Dr. Jon. He used to own a series of Jenny Craig's. He wanted to make changes to help his clients but was not allowed by corporate. So he flew the coop and open HAG. He claims that the place is somehow shock therapy to help people see just how bad overeating can be.

I not only doubt that. I don't believe it all all. My guess is that there's more money in catering to people's weaknesses than trying to help them overcome. Not that the latter is his responsibility. But do we really want to contribute to the obesity epidemic in any way? Perceived or otherwise?

Customers have to wear hospital gowns. The waitresses are dressed like nurses on a porn set. And Bosso is dressed as a doc, of course. There's a blood pressure machine and a massive scale in the restaurant, as well as a wheelchair. Why the wheelchair you ask?

Apparently if you finish a tripe or quadruple bypass burger, a "private" nurse will wheel you to your car.

Also on the menu are unfiltered cigarettes and flatliner fries. Fried in lard, but of course. It might be funny if these things were on the menu but no one actually ordered them. But that's all that's on the menu and people certainly are ordering them.

I suppose Mr. Bosso has the right to open the Heart Attack Grill. But it sure would be nice if folks felt at least the teensiest bit of social responsibility. Does anyone really need to be adding to the world's problems?

After meeting Bosso, I feel even more sure of the insidiousness of this enterprise. The man is not jovial about what he's created. He's perfectly pleased with himself. Smug, in fact.

And there's something almost haughty and self-possessed about the guy as he strides through the aisles praising the massive customers. You can almost see him rubbing his hands together, throwing his head back, and letting out an evil "Ah ha ha ha" like some character from an old B horror film.

It all comes down the question of whether you use your powers for good rather than evil. You have to wonder when the last time was that the guy took a long, hard look in the mirror. I'd like to think that if he knew this wasn't a joke, maybe he'd reconsider. But I doubt it.

If you happen to be reading this, Mr. Bosso, I have a question for you. You already killed your spokesperson. (At 29. And Bosso admitted to being part of his death.) Who's next?

Mad Hatter's Ball...Ummmm, is anyone else in costume?

I had a bit of an Elle Woods in Legally Blonde moment. You know the scene when Elle shows up at the party dressed as a Playboy bunny and no one else is in costume?

In my case if was a full on Mad Hatter’s costume and a few other people were in costume. But I did feel like I went a little overboard as I stepped out of the car and watched other guests enter the event in cocktail dresses and wild hats. Oops.

Not to mention that I didn’t notice that my hat said 420/69 on it where the 10/6 should be. Sigh. A couple of handsome, drunk guys generously pointed it out to me though. Not sure I played it off very well.

But it did prepare me for when two older ladies asked me about the meaning. I just took a deep breath, giggled, and said it meant something naughty and definitely not appropriate for the neighborhood Halloween party.

The event was the Mad Hatter’s Ball, the Lakewood Service League’s annual, spring fundraiser. This year it was held at Lofty Spaces all decked-out as Wonderland with TrueBeautyRX as the event’s presenting sponsor.

As for the food, there was a dinner buffet by Wolfgang Puck Catering and the cutest dessert buffet with jars of jelly bellys, giant swirly lollipops, and gourmet versions of childhood snack cakes like Twinkies and Ring Dings. A live band and casino games were the entertainment for the evening.

The live auction included all sorts of high-end trips and packages and the silent auction had some impressive packages as well. As far as I could tell, they raised some serious cash, including $7,500 in donations (outside of the auction) to send nine teenage mothers and pregnant teens to a summer camp support program.

After one martini with a sugar swizzle stick, I forgot all about my costume. Now if I can just remember to fix that hat before Halloween.

Playing Subject to Photographer George Krause

There’s something very warm and inviting about the way photographer George Krause not just looks at, but sees people. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve known him for years or just met him, he’s equally as interested in discovering your story through his lens.

You might not know you were in the presence of greatness from his casual, Saturday afternoon style of dress to his laidback demeanor. But the guy’s a rock star by all counts.

Krause graduated from the Philadelphia College of Art and was honored with the first Prix de Rome and the first Fulbright/Hays grant ever awarded to a photographer. He also has two Guggenheim fellowships and three grants from the National Endowment for the Arts under his belt.

His work is all about that talent he has for looking and seeing and watching and capturing. This Saturday he was taking Sfumato portraits at the Photographs Do Not Bend Gallery doing exactly that. And I was exited to go.

Krause photographed me several years ago at his studio in Wimberley, TX. So I thought to might be fun to have a go at it again since this clearly would be a very different experience. That first time around was a nude, full body shot.

It was such a crazy day. It was cold and raining and you have to stand in this big light box to be photographed that is just a short walk from his house. So, you’re naked and cold and in this barn type of space, trying not to shiver (or giggle for that matter) while the photograph is taken.

This time was much easier. Krause was taking head and shoulder portraits using his smaller, portable light box. Several people were at the studio when I arrived on Saturday just after noon with my girlfriend and daughter (who were also there to be photographed).

I was tickled that Krause remembered me despite it being so long since we had seen one another. He gave me a big hug and told me all about his new large, portable light box that he’s hoping to bring to Dallas before too long to do another a series of nudes.

Then he invited me to step into the box. It’s actually a bit more like an open cave then a box. At 5 feet tall, even with very high heels on, I had to stand on several wooden boxes in order for the light to hit in just the right spot, which also means that my head was almost touching the top of the “cave.” Then he snapped a few shots and he was off to the next subject.

Krause invited me to come out to his studio again some time, which I look forward to doing before too long, and then we said our good-byes. As I walked through the small showing of his work at the gallery, I was reminded again of why I enjoy his work so much.

Krause’s photographs slow the world down to a complete stop at an instant when one might never otherwise think of stopping. And I am grateful for the opportunity to not just look but, instead, like Krause, to really see.

There are zebras in my Outback!

Ok, so there weren't actually zebras in my Outback. But they were certainly surrounding it and poking their heads into it. Of course, it wasn't just zebras, it was also a variety of other large beasts of one kind or another who live at Fossil Rim. It seemed like the perfect place to take the Outback. You know, on safari!!

And I was right. We were in the car for six hours that day and didn't even notice. All three of us were perfectly comfy. We could have easily added another kid or two to the back seat, in fact. The weather was gorgeous, the stereo was blasting, and the animals were surrounding us left and right.

I made the mistake of not buying feed when we bought our admission tickets. But we broke the rules and allowed the animals a few nibbles of a Subway sandwich, some almonds, and a Luna bar (the last of which they LOVED, by the way). All in all it was a great day and we will certainly be going back. But, next time, I am definitely buying the feed!

What to wear to Nia...

Ever since my articles about Nia came out in American Way and Conscious Dancer, readers have been asking me what one wears to a Nia class. The simple answer is anything you can move in. But there is a sort of Nia style that’s developed that includes mostly bell-bottomed flowy pants and either fitted athletic tops or swooshy dresses on top.

Here are a few of my fave brands:

NiaWear – NiaWear comes straight from the source. You can purchase it from headquarters, online, or from most Nia instructors. I have several pieces and love all of it. The colors and styles are, of course, perfectly suited to doing Nia. They also great for hooping too actually. I love my bell-bottomed pants with the attached short skirt and the coordinating black tank with NiaWear logo.

Melodia – I got my first pieces of Melodia at the Lightening in a Bottle festival. The cotton is so soft and the styling is so groovy. It definitely looks like festival wear but translates perfectly to the Nia classroom.

Ipseity – I wanted an outfit from Ipseity from the minute I saw the line at a trunk show at headquarters. My girlfriend generously surprised me with one this Valentine’s Day. This stuff is so funky. I love it. And I can’t imagine any other part of my life where I could get away with what my husband calls my “Lord of the Rings” get-up. I love the rich purple and the soft, hearty fabric. And I just feel so groovy in it. Even if I’m not feeling up for class, I immediately get in the mood once I get these on.

Tdama– I love my Tdama tiered gaucho pants. The fabric could not be any softer and they look so good on. Dancing in them is great. But they also translate much better in the “real world” then a lot of my other Nia clothes do. Sometimes I wear them around the house or around town even when I don't have class. Because the tiers on these particular pants start so far down, they also look really cook with a skirt on top of them .

Margarita Wear – These clothes are so cool!! They’re what I would have picked out as a kid but figured I wasn’t allowed to wear now since I’m a grown-up. Heck with that. The compression fabric is so strong that the pants look like they were made to fit a five-year-old before you get them on. But they look awesome on. My favorites are the ones with the giant rainbow on the bottom. Total 70s. But I also dig my polka dot and striped pairs. They’re not cheap. But then none of these lines really are. But they are definitely worth it. And, if you’re lucky, you can sometimes catch them on Ebay!

One thing I can say for all of these companies’ clothes is that the materials wash well, which is key if you’re washing things every week. I always wash them on the gentle cycle (warm/cold) and then hang them or lay them flat to dry. And most of them still look brand new despite lots of dancing and floor play!

As I mentioned right off, you can wear anything you like to Nia and my classes are always filled with students wearing everything from yoga pants to sweat pants to homemade goodies to full-on Nia gear. So don’t let the clothes scare you. This is definitely a no-uniform required kind of practice. But if you are looking for some Nia-appropriate garb, these are a few good places to start!

The Tulip Fest at Wooden Shoe

I was in Portland, OR last week to earn my Blue Belt in Nia. When the intensive was through and the sun finally showed its face, we headed out to Woodburn, OR to the Tulip Fest. It was amazing. I've never seen so many gorgeous tulip blooms in one place. There was also tons of stuff for kids to do, vendors, great fair-type food, and, of course, tulips and tulip bulbs for sale! A must do if you're in the area. It runs through May 8th. Here are a few pics from the event:

Just got back from an intensive week of training to become a Nia instructor. It was an incredibly powerful week filled with lots of crying, laughing, and, of course, dancing. I have never taught a class. But I am considering taking that step soon. In the meantime, I am loving taking classes with my amazing instructor Jule at MoveStudio! Shecky's Girls' Night Out

Had a blast at Shecky's Girls Night Out last night! It was my second year in a row and it is such a cool event. All sorts of shopping and beauty services all in one place. Plus, awesome goodie bags and free Contreau cocktails. I don't see how a girl could go wrong!

My friend Cindy and my girlfriend Jamie and I all went together and the two of them did some serious shopping. I on the other hand was very good! LOL They bought dresses and jewelry and accessories. We each tried one of the signature cocktails - one with pineapple juice, one with grapefruit juice, and one with cranberry juice. They were all delicious! We had hoped to go to the cocktail seminar but they were running 30 minutes late so we left before our allotted time. So, be sure to sign up early!

Our goodie bags were jam packed. There was body wash and air freshener and lip gloss and mini teeth flossers and books and cocktail shakers and nail decor and on and on. Plus it comes in the cutest bag. I would probably go just for that!

The event is at FIG and tonight is the last night. You can get tickets online or at the door. Buy With Me even had some! Just remember that General Admission tix do not come with goodie bags. So, be sure to get the right kind of ticket.

Arsenic and Old Lace at the Dallas Theater Center

I know I get accused of gushing. But you'll have to forgive me, because I'm about to do it again. I loved Dallas Theater Center's latest production, Arsenic and Old Lace. Loved it. It was such a thrill to see Betty Buckley and Tovah Feldshuh on stage. They were both wonderful and their chemistry on-stage together was a delight.

That's not to say that the rest of the cast was anything to sneeze at. Abbey Siegworth as Elaine and Lee Trull as Mortimer were equally fantastic. And Jason Douglass as Jonathan was too scary. Way too scary, which I guess is a good thing for a show like these. But the guy gave me nightmares!

The show is a classic. But it's easy to muck up. No risk of that here. Although, I have to admit, the second act runs a little long. More the fault of the script than of this production. Still, it would have benefited from some shortening.

The set was incredible. A entire house was built onto the stage and spins around to reveal the interior of the home, which serves a backdrop to almost the entire show. The sound design was excellent, definitely adding to the overall creepiness.

The costumes were perfection. I want to borrow the sisters' funeral outfits. I don't know where I would where them. But I would throw a party just to have the chance to don them.

Truth is, you'd be crazy not to see this show - to see Buckley and Felshuh, to see the resident and other cast members, and to have the pants scared off you old school.

No blood or gore required.

Thank You For Being A Freind

I have been a Golden Girls fan for as long as I can remember. (Come on, admit it, you have been too.) And right now, Uptown Players is performing a new show at The Rose Room called Thank You For Being a Friend, based on the show and its characters. Unofficially, of course. What fun would it be otherwise!

The gang's all there - Blanche, Rose, Sophia, and Dorothy. Only now they're Blanchette, Roz, Sophie, and Dorothea. And they are up to some pretty serious antics, including a showdown with next door neighbor Lance Bass. Yup. Lance Bass of 'N Sync "fame."

Dorthea, played by Lon Barrera, is almost too good to be true, as are Michael B. Moore as Blanchette and Chris Robinson as Roz. John de Los Santos as Sophie was a little much for my taste, too broad - no pun intended - and lacking in the authenticity that marked Barrera's, Moore's, and Robinson's performances.

The set is a hoot. The music is hilarious. And the costumes are worth the price of admission. Some of it was a bit off-color even for me. But certainly not enough to keep me away and it shouldn't keep you from checking it out either.

All I can say is, if you don't laugh, you're missing a missing a funny bone. And my guess is you can find it somewhere in the 80s!

Get Floating

So, I spent Saturday afternoon doing something very interesting - floating. You heard me right, floating. There's a new place in Dallas called Adrift where you can go and float in a private tank filled with enough salt to keep the Titanic afloat. It was the most bizarre and wonderful experience. First you get to spend fifteen minutes in a zero gravity massage chair, which you will swear is a person by the time it's done with you. Then you take a nice hot shower which opens right into your private floating chamber - or your couple's floating chamber. Your call. Then you lay back into the water while your choice of soothing sounds play. I chose the ocean. And you can even opt for color therapy where the water gently changes color throughout your session. After that you just, well, float.

It took me awhile to relax. I'm not so great at relaxing anyway and the whole thing seemed so foreign. But once I settled in, I drifted in and out of sleep and was more relaxed than I can remember ever being. I'll definitely be back. I'm hoping I'll be better at getting into the zone the second time around. Plus, I cannot wait to get back in the massage chair. If Adrift offered just that as a service, you can be sure I would sign-up! At least until I can figure out how I can get one of my own.

Much more interesting than who old Brad chooses though is what effect the show being filmed there will have on tourism in Anguilla.

St. Lucia certainly got a boost from serving as the setting for the show in the past. The Director of St Lucia Tourism, Louis Lewis, has been quoted as saying that "average daily visits to www.saintlucianow.com and the number of requests for destination e-books more than doubled since the February 15 episode which initially featured Saint Lucia." And Jade Mountain, the resort where The Bachelor proposal took place that season, reported 15,000 hits on their website the night of The Bachelor season finale.

It'll be interesting to see. Either way, it sure would be nice to spend eight days in Anguilla...

And I did a lot of crying hanging on that wall. But Matt and the crew got me up - and down. Here are a few pics of me climbing in that gear, which make me feel like a rock star! Scarpa Epic Approach Shoes

For the beginner's climbing camp I attended with Matt Walker from Inner Passage, I needed to get my hand on all kinds of gear. So here are reviews of some of the things that made my trip easier!

I didn't even know there was such a thing as approach shoes. But, I suppose one does need to approach the rocks if one is going to climb them. Anyway, I was glad I had these with my. They were incredibly comfortable and offered great support. And since I have super-high arches, that was greatly appreciated. They have actually become my favorite go-to shoes. I trained in them for the Breast Cancer 3-Day and walked the 60-mile event in them! I'm sure it's time to retire them. But I don't see that happening until I get my hands on a new pair!

The North Face Zephyrus Pullover

Love this pullover. It kept me warm and dry and was awesome for layering. I learned very quickly that layering is key for climbing - and tone of other activities for that matter!

Lole Jasper Jacket

This jacket is almost too good-looking for wearing outside. It's hard to tell in the pic, but it looks like a real jacket, not outerwear. I wear it to travel in a lot since it never looks wrinkly or gets dirty. And it looks amazing with my black Lole Balance pants, which are also awesome for travel. No matter how long you sit, they never get stretched out of shape. I love my Lole Evolution capris for the same reason. I climb, hike, canoe, dance, do yoga, and go to the supermarket in them. I have a Lole uniform I wear almost all the time now between these pieces and my Lole Silhouette tops!

Westcomb Jacket

This jacket has such a nice body to it. Instead of meaning mushy. It has a really form and shape to it that it somehow keeps no matter what. It is super breathable and great for layering with everything. I wear it for traveling too - adventure and otherwise - and it looks really sharp on the rocks and at the post office!

The North Face Scythe Jacket

I am OBSESSED with this jacket. We call it the Muppet jacket because it's so furry and snuggly. You can wear it like a sweater or hoodie or as an outside jacket. I know clothes aren't necessarily designed to be comforting. But this jacket really is. If I'm feeling grumpy or blue, I nuggle into this jacket and feel so much better. It's hard to be unhappy in anything this purple and so, so super soft!

Mammut Keiko Jacket

This jacket is amazing. It is kind of incredible engineering-wise. It's a summer weight shell that offers multi-sport weather protection. But it is ULTRA light. It feels strangely light actually. Apparently it only weighs 12 ounces. It's fully waterproof and breathable. Plus, it's made form Mammut’s DryTech Premium stretchy hard shell fabric, but somehow moves and wears like a softshell. In other words, it's super protective but doesn't make that hideous crunch sound when you move around. Thank goodness.

It also has a waterproof zipper, adjustable hem and hood, watertight zippers on the two front pockets, pre-shaped sleeves with adjustable cuffs, and zippered underarm ventilation. Sorry, I'm rambling. But this is such a super-cool jacket. Truth be told, I've been wearing it constantly since I got it in October and it's already January. I think I've found my year-round love!

Patagonia Nano Puff

I have fallen in love with this Nano Puff Jacket. It is ridiculously warm despite being super thin and easy to squash down into almost nothing. I actually slept in it when we were camping!

Tilley Hats

These hats offer super sun protection and do not give me a migraine - which is a very big deal since most do!

The North Face Nalani Backpack/Tote and Wayfinder Duffle

I am an excellent packer. And I NEVER check luggage. But with the airlines getting insane about the size of luggage, even carry-ons that have allowable in the past are getting me in trouble now. But no one even thought of stopping me with these two pieces. The 19" Wayfinder holds a TON more than it looks like and you can get into the Nalami from the top or the sides. Plus it has pockets and zippers and can be carried as a tote or a backpack. I've officially found my two favorite travel companions...and they never ask for the window seat either!

Mammut Crea Light Pack

I have to say it - I felt so cool with this pack on. It is totally the real deal. It has a zillion pouches and pockets and you can pull it all in tight with all of the attached straps in order to keep everything nice and tidy. Plus, it has this super light frame that keeps any of it from touching your pack and causing you to get hot and sweaty. And I do not like being hot and sweaty. Water bottles fit on the sides and you can keep shoving stuff in and in and in. If there's a limit, I haven't reached it yet.

Petzl Helmet

I had no idea what a difference the right helmet would make. This helmet was super-adjustable and fit me awesome. It was perfectly comfortable and breezy, especially with a Buff underneath. My climbing partner had a helmet that was rented and it kept slipping off and driving her nuts, which made me extra glad that I have this one. Plus, it's pretty great looking!

Mammut Vision Harness

The same thing goes for my Mammut harness. It fit great. It looks awesome. And even if you're a casual climber, like me, it's so nice to have your own harness adjusted just the way you like it with no one else sweating it up. And everyone I climb with is always complaining about how uncomfortable their harnesses are and how they can't wait to take them off. Me? Not so much. Don't tell anyone. But I kind of like wearing it around. Everyone thinks I'm a hard core climber, and who am I to tell them otherwise...

Scarpa Thunder Climbing Shoes

I love these shoes. And it's not like I have a thing for purple suede. Although I sure do now! Climbing shoes are supposed to fit snugly. But they are not supposed to break your toes. These fit like ballet slippers. They are shockingly comfortable despite being so tight. They are super supportive and very sticky, which is definitely want when you're faced with a sheer rock face!

Buff Headwear

I know. It just looks like a scrap of fabric. That's exactly what I thought when I first saw it too. But the Buff is so much more. It's bug repellent and protects you from the sun. It wicks sweat and it fits great under a climbing helmet. You can wear it in lots of different ways and it looks pretty awesome no matter what you do with it. You can also tie your ponytail back with it or wear it on your wrist to mop up sweat. Gotta love multi-purpose.

The North Face Flux Power Stretch

This was another great layering piece. It is super soft and stretchy and comfortably fitted. Not in a "this is way too tight to move in" sort of way. But instead in a "I feel comfy and warm and can still reach that hold up there" sort of way. And when I'm not climbing or working out, I wear it running errands or hanging out writing. I have a habit of wearing too many hoodies and this is a great thing to wear instead.

The North Face Outbound Pant

These are great for all kind of adventures, indoor and out. But they look enough like khakis to wear for a day shopping or running around town.

The North Face Horizon Valley Convertible Pant

These are great as pants or shorts and have been great for climbing, hiking, bowling, and even roller skating. And the fabric refuses to stain or rip. And, believe me, I tried.

Tilley Waterproof Jacket

This jacket can fold up into itself into a nice tidy packet that you can even wear around your waist like a belt bag. It is waterproof and provides great coverage while taking up next to no room on your luggage or your pack.

Lole

This shirt is as comfortable as it is good-looking. I wear it for everyday wear as much as I wear it for travel and adventure wear. It's great for layering, is highly breathable, and shockingly easy to keep clean. Stains seem to fall right off of it, which is a very good thing for me. Kinda klutzy with the coffee.

The time has arrived to recruit new friends to join us as supernumeraries for The Dallas Opera’s exciting 2010-2011 season in the new Winspear Opera House! There will be an open casting call for new supers Tuesday January 11, 2011 from 7:00-9:00p. We are looking for men, women and children of all ages for our upcoming productions of Romeo & Juliet, Rigoletto and Boris Godunov. Supernumeraries, otherwise known as ‘Supers’, play a vital role in the success of operas. These individuals do not have to speak or sing, but have a great attitude and a love or desire to be on the stage. They play servants, priests, guards, soldiers, maids, villagers, etc. to help fill the stage for productions. Rehearsals and performances take place in the evening, with occasional daytime rehearsals on the weekends and Sunday matinees.

DTC's A Christmas Carol & The Grinch at AT&T - Holiday Must-Sees!

The two shows are strangely similar. Happy townspeople preparing for and celebrating the holidays. Bad guy who hates Christmas because his heart was broken or is too small. I took my eleven-year-old in tow to see both and she and I enjoyed both immensely. Although the first is perhaps more for adults and the second more for kids, both shows were perfect for nearly all ages!

DTC's production of A Christmas Carol stars Chamblee Ferguson as Scrooge and he is nothing short of stupendous. He's horrible and hilarious and you can't help but feel sorry for the poor guy despite his very poor behavior. The entire cast is terrific, as is the music and the set. Now, I didn't mind Liz Mikel as Jacob Marley. She was stellar, as always. I just would have liked a teeny explanation. I am as open-minded as the next girl. But when a black woman plays a dead white guy, I need at least a humorous aside as way of explanation.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas, now playing at the Winspear/AT&T, is adorable.The show looks and sounds just like the book. For the most part any way. In this version, Max, the Grinch's dog narrates, which is a cute twist. The Grinch played by Stefan Karl was amazing. His make-up took a little getting used to. Although much else looked almost exactly like the Seuss drawings, he seemed a little strange. That aside he was funny and scary and physically very Grinchy. The show stealer however was Brooke Boyd as Cindy-Lou Who. If she was any cuter, she would have imploded. All I can say is that girl's got a career and a half ahead of her!

Both of these shows are a great way to get in the holiday spirit. So, get ye to the box office. And don't forget your Kleenex when you go to the theater...

Black Swan Shocks, Disturbs, Thrills, and Excites - My Kind of Film

I don't know what I expected. I saw the trailer. I know the story of the Swan Lake. I love Natalie Portman. And I want Mila Kunis. Still I would never have expected to be so enthralled and so utterly disturbed by Black Swan.

If you think this film is about ballet, you are missing the point. Black Swan is about a young woman who knows what she wants but doesn't know herself at all.

The plot is simple. Nina, played by Portman, dances in the NYC Ballet and longs to be the Swan Queen. She lands the role and is perfect as the innocent White Swan. But she must find a way to dance the role of the sinister, sultry Black Swan as well.

Nina's mother treats her like a little girl, the company director comes on to her, and a new company member seems set on stealing the role. But, in the end, the only one standing in Nina's way is Nina.

The film is terrifying and sometimes bloody. It is so scary because it's not bogey men in the night who threaten Nina, it is her own mind, blurring true and false and leading her to frightening behavior, which is sometimes real and sometimes not. That's the really freaky part. The audience is never quite sure when they are in the real world and when they are in "Nina's world."

This is not a film for dummies. I sat next to two women whose brains were not, let's say, mature enough, to handle the movie. They giggled at some of the most crucial moments, mistaking metaphor for actuality. The director doesn't really want the audience to believe Nina's literally becoming a swan. It's figurative. You have to be on somewhat of a higher plane to get it. But if you do get, man, it is one trip you do not want to miss.

See this film. The music is stunning. The costumes are worth the cost of admission alone and Portman's performance, let alone those of the other cast members, will leave you astounded.

Oh, and, Black Swan has the hottest girl on girl non-porn sex scene ever. Ever. I only have one thing to say. Yes, please.

The Skinny on "Squirting"

Women ejaculate. I know. I know. That may come as a surprise to some. It certainly came as a surprise to me when I first heard about it. But it’s true.

I receive a lot of questions from readers, which I love. Some I’ll answer by email. But when I receive the same one again and again, I’ll answer it right here on my blog.

The emails I receive range from people who are shocked to people who are horrified to people who are simply curious, like this one.

I am what you might call a squirter during sex. In fact I have down right gushers during orgasms. I am almost able to control it (as in on demand) as I become older. I am now 39 and I started noticing this condition in my mid 20's. I have found it is something most men strongly desire. So, I’m not complaining. But what in the world causes this?

Well, M, I’ve got good news for you and all of your fellow squirters. There is no cause for worry. Female ejaculation is perfectly normal. And it certainly isn’t anything to “complain about.” It’s just a matter of biology and sexual activity.

G-spot stimulation is generally the cause of “squirting” or female ejaculation. It is not a myth as some say. And it is most certainly not urine as some insist on suggesting. It is ejaculate and its source is the Skene’s glands. It actually bears some similarity to the fluid produced by the male prostate.

Although it can seem like a lot of fluid, women generally ejaculate no more than 2 to 3 teaspoons at a time (although some have been known to produce a cup of liquid or more) and it is a perfectly healthy thing to experience.

Stimulating the g-spot with curved fingers moving inside the vagina in a “come hither” fashion or using a curved g-spot toy like the G-Ki
or the MONA is the best way to cause a woman to ejaculate.

Deep breathing and squeezing the PC muscles at the same time can also help, as can adding in some clitoral stimulation (manual, oral, or with a vibrator). And be sure to withdraw anything inside you before coming, otherwise the ejaculation may not be able to occur.

Although some women feel embarrassed or concerned about ejaculating, they really shouldn’t. And it’s important that correct information on the subject is shared so that “squirting” will no longer be a source of shame. So spread the good word about this perfectly good behavior.
Some people actually get a great deal of pleasure from watching women ejaculate and some pornography is dedicated specifically to squirting. You can find it all over the Internet from tame to wild. So, don’t worry about liking it whether you are the squirter of the squirtee. It’s all good.

Now, for the second most popular question on the topic – if you’re not a squirter now, can you become one? Survey says…absolutely. All it takes is a little practice and a lot of letting go. A good sexual partner shouldn’t mind a bit. It’s all part of sexual exploration.

So, if you’re already a squirter, enjoy. If you’re not and would like to be, get practicing, you just might find a whole new level of sex and intimacy to enjoy. You never know until you try.

Jenny Block on Nightline - Tonight's the Night!

So, last week, (one week ago tonight, in fact) I took part in a debate about adultery and its relevance in the 21st century. We also discussed the Ten Commandments, the Bible, and whether or not people are born to cheat. What a night!

The debate took place at Fellowship Church in Grapevine, Texas and included Jonathan Daugherty, founder and director Be Broken Ministries; Cynthia McFadden, "Nightline" co-anchor; Ed Young, pastor of Fellowship Church; Noel Biderman, CEO of ashleymadison.com; and myself. It was an hour and a half long and it was wild. The paper reported that more than 4000 people were there and I'm here to report that only a handful took a liking to me. It was mostly members of the church and they mostly had very conservative views, as you can likely imagine.

The show airs tonight at 11:30 p.m. Eastern. I hope you'll tune in and then let me know what you think. I'm curious to see what the edit looks like. You never know...

What an amazing night!

I was so honored to receive a Lambda Literary Award last night for my book "Open: Love, Sex, and Life in an Open Marriage" (Seal Press, 2008). Thank you to the Lambda Literary Foundation for this wonderful honor.

I was in SUCH shock when they called my name. I had nothing prepared so I did my best to bumble through my thank you's. The evening was so much fun.

(I still can't believe I won!!!)
